You can also monitor database mirroring using Performance Monitor and the database mirroring counters. You can find the Performance Monitor counters under the SQL Server: Database Mirroring object. Table 4-5 lists some of the more important Performance Monitor counters that you can use with database mirroring.

If you have worked with or developed BI software, you are very familiar with presenting information with standard data controls. Figure 4-1 shows common controls (in Silverlight) used to present data: a data grid, a list, and a tree view. Showing even large amounts of data in UI controls is straightforward. However, it could be challenging to enhance data controls with good interactivity (e.g., paging, sorting, and filtering). When the data sets are small, this is a moot point. However, when dealing with thousands of items or more, it can be nearly impossible for users to interact with the data.

In a BI 2.0 system, one of the questions a UI expert needs to answer is how users are going to find the data they want from a large data set. There are several types of data manipulation or techniques users can apply to find the data in the format they expect to make easier decisions. I will go over the main types in the following subsections.

The user can select a product in the DataGrid and edit the record in a DataForm below the UI. You also implement the DataPager. None of this functionality requires any C# code. It is all done in XAML, although you do write some code for custom functionality and to submit changes to the database. Begin by grabbing the DomainDataSource and its configuration from the ListBoxPage. Also copy the appropriate xmlns namespaces to gain access to the client-side domain service code as well as the RIA controls. Next, drag the DataGrid, DataForm, and DataPager controls from the Toolbox to Visual Studio to set things up. You now databind the DataGrid and DataPager to the ProductsDDS.Data property, just as you did in ListBoxPage.xaml. The DataPager does not have an ItemsSource property. Instead, you use the DataPager. Source property. Also set PageSize to 5, and make the DataGrid read-only. Configure the DataForm, setting the Header value to Product Details , setting AutoCommit to True, and forcing the vertical scrollbar to be visible. The most interesting setting is the DataForm.CurrentItem property that is databound to the ProductsGrid SelectedItem property: CurrentItem="{Binding SelectedItem,ElementName=ProductsGrid}" The work so far results in a functional UI, as shown in Figure 9-10.

If you let Performance Monitor run and there is no transaction activity on your principal, you will see the pattern of the database mirroring pings appear in your capture. Monitor the Total Bytes Sent/sec or the Mirroring Bytes Sent/sec counter to see the pings.
