When a name server is processing a query, it might be required to send out several queries to find the answer. With each query, the name server discovers other name servers that have authority for a portion of the domain namespace. The name server caches these query results to reduce network traffic.

Overview of Name Resolution 13-35

The Object[]s returned by this query contain a Long at index 0, a String at index 1, and a BigDecimal or MonetaryAmount at index 2. These are scalar values, not entity instances. Therefore, they aren t in any persistent state, like an entity instance would be. They aren t transactional and obviously aren t checked automatically for dirty state. We call this kind of query a scalar query.

The next step is to try accessing the Web site from other network segments or subnets. You are attempting to discover whether there is an infrastructure issue affecting part, but not all, of the network. For example, there could be a routing or switching problem that is preventing a specific subnet from accessing the Internet. There could be a cabling problem that has disconnected a subnet from the rest of the network. There could also be a Group Policy configuration issue that is affecting some of the computers on the network, but not all of them. For a troubleshooter, this type of testing requires a familiarity with the underlying infrastructure of the network. You can try to access a site from various other computers, but unless you know how the network is laid out, you can t draw any conclusions other than the existence of a problem beyond the individual workstation. An enterprise network that has been properly designed and constructed should also be properly diagrammed and documented, so even a technician new to the organization should be able to consult these records to determine what the computers experiencing a problem have in common.

When a name server receives a query result, the following process takes place (see Figure 13-11): 1. The name server caches the query result for a specified amount of time, which is referred to as Time to Live (TTL).

2. After the name server caches the query result, TTL starts counting down from its original value. 3. When TTL expires, the name server deletes the query result from its cache. Caching query results enables the name server to resolve other queries to the same portion of the domain namespace quickly.

Getting distinct results When you use a SELECT clause, the elements of the result are no longer guaranteed to be unique. For example, item descriptions aren t unique, so the following query may return the same description more than once:

Shorter TTL values ensure that data about the domain namespace is more current across the network. However, shorter TTL values cause the cached values to expire sooner and increase the DNS traffic. A longer TTL value causes the cached values to be retained longer, which decreases the DNS traffic but increases the risk of the entries becoming stale. If a change does occur, the client does not receive the updated information until the TTL expires and a new query to that portion of the domain namespace is resolved.

It s difficult to see how it could be meaningful to have two identical rows in a query result, so if you think duplicates are likely, you normally use the DISTINCT keyword:

A reverse lookup query maps an IP address to a name. Troubleshooting tools, such as the nslookup command-line tool, use reverse lookup queries to report back host names. Additionally, certain applications implement security based on the capability to connect to names, not IP addresses.
